Alec Soth: Last Days of W. Opening

- Very excited for this show, the newspaper Alec printed was one of my favorite books from last year and I can't wait to see the prints in person. I'll be heading up to the opening when I get out of work on Tuesday, hope to see you there.

"Gagosian Gallery is pleased to present "The Last Days of W.," color photographs taken by Alec Soth between 2000 and 2008.

Although originally conceived without explicit political intent, in retrospect Soth considers this selected body of work, which spans both terms of George W. Bush's presidency, to represent "a panoramic look at a country exhausted by its catastrophic leadership." Soth's earlier series such as "Sleeping by the Mississippi," "NIAGARA," and "Dog Days, Bogotá" – all subjective narratives containing disenfranchised figures and decaying landscapes -- laid the conceptual groundwork for "The Last Days of W." It provides a wry commentary on the adverse effects of the national administration, perhaps best exemplified by an unwittingly ironic remark that Bush made in 2000: "I think we can agree, the past is over."

Following in the humanist tradition established by the great chroniclers of the American experience such as Walker Evans, Robert Frank, and Stephen Shore, Soth captures diverse images of a country disillusioned with, and deceived by, its own identity, from mothers of marines serving in Iraq to teenage mothers in the Louisiana Bayou; from religious propaganda in the American workplace to the mortgage crisis in Stockton, CA. His incisive depiction of contemporary American reality confronts the ideals romanticized in the American Dream with the hastening decline of the American Empire."

Albrecht Tübke

- Albrecht Tübke was next on my list of photographers to write about and I just realized that Jörg posted a great review of his book Portraits. For the project Tübke traveled the world's cities taking portraits of people from all different walks of life. I liked this excerpt from Val Williams essay about the work; "Tübke has a gift for allowing his subjects to perform in their own solitary drama. "Many people", he writes, "try to hide their emotions and feelings as they go about everyday life. This public persona is often calculated to mask what is within, creating a veneer of individuality, a fabrication to hide behind." In "Citizens", Tübke has created, from real life, a cast of characters who play their parts in the urban drama. All of the people he has photographed pose in the same way, directly facing the camera, in front of a background of concrete or stained brick wall...These are people with their own secrets, joys; anxieties, dreads and anticipations, but we can only wonder as to what they are. Tübke's photographs are cool and beautiful enough to be fashion images, a studied reflection of street style, but in the end, this is belied by the democracy of their vision." Daniel Shea

- I just found Daniel Shea's work after he left a comment on my Top 10 Photo Books of '08 post. These images are from his series Removing Mountains where he explores the coal-mining industry in Appalachia, "What began as an interest in the modern coal mining process known as mountaintop removal, quickly evolved into an extensive survey of the social, political, and perhaps most importantly, cultural implications of extracting coal from Appalachian Mountains. What I found over the course of the trip was that these coal-mining process had quickly developed into one of the most destructive and pervasive forms of modern industry in the world." - I love these portraits that I came across on the Eggleston Trust website. Believed to be Eggleston's first published work, these black and white photos of faculty members of Memphis State University (including a young William Christenberry) were taken when he was just 24 years old.

Tierney Gearon

- Tierney Gearon is one of my favorite photographers, she has a new show opening today at London's Phillips de Pury & Company. The show features new work which is quite a departure from Gearon's autobiographical family portraits. The new series titled Explosure uses double exposures where the compositions and themes act in contrast to each other. From her statement, "Through talking with my steidldangin publisher Pascal Dangin, who inspired me to double expose my images by taking pictures of myself, then exposing them on top of whatever I wanted. I felt incredibly stimulated and creatively challenged by this idea and knew that I could do something amazing and push my images a step further. Sarah Small

- I just came across Sarah Small's photography in the new Winter issue of 1000 Words Magazine. In the magazine Small's photos are accompanied by an interesting essay by Cara Philips, heres and excerpt "... Small's documentary based images, also reveal a world that is a heady mix of horror, humour, beauty, and the uncanny. Employing various methods to obscure her visual language, similar to Milton's manipulation of traditional language, she stimulates the imagination of the viewer. And like Milton, Small bases her work in subject matter that is familiar and that relates to reality, but mixes it with her own vision of the world." Here are the details, "I've decided to make some limited edition prints available here on the blog. I am offering five 11x14 prints in editions of 25. The prints are from a project I worked on last winter with the Human Rights Education Institute that is titled "Living Within Limits: A Collaboration with Nature". We here in North Idaho have had over 80 inches of snow in the last two weeks and I am feeling like these images are an appropriate offering. - Phil is from my hometown and good friends with my brother and sister. I used to sit in on some of his classes while he was teaching at Rockland Community College and he's a great dude. He is currently finishing his MFA in photography from the Massachusetts College of Art. I was sent a link to his website last night and really enjoy his current body of work about car interiors. From his statement, "The interior of the car offers a thin line between public and private space. The interior, which is often littered with personal artifacts, offers a cryptic portrait of their owners. The aging exterior once shiny and new offers a glimpse of something that ultimately cannot be kept in its original state. The combination of both the interior and exterior reflect who we are, where we come from and ultimately where we’re going. My work is a modest examination of all these things." Michael Itkoff

- While I was at Strand last week I picked up a copy of Michael Itkoff's book Street Portraits. Although I had only known him as being one of the founding editors of Daylight Magazine and not by his work the book was only $14 and looked interesting. For the project Itkoff traveled throughout the world to cities such as London, Hanoi, Sydney, Bangkok, and New York taking pictures of everyday people in the street. Having an assistant hold up a white backdrop only behind the subjects head and shoulders Itkoff creates a striking aesthetic isolating the subjects from their urban contexts and allowing them to exist in a shared visual space as part of the same extended family. Happy New Year

- Hey all, December left me with very little time for blogging. Between school, work, and the holidays I was swamped but now I will be back at it full time. There will be some new changes with the blog, hopefully a new design soon, and two new sections including a new print publication and an online gallery. The zine Disposable will feature a portfolio by a different photographer each month shot using only disposable cameras. So far some really amazing photographers have signed on to do issues and I am getting really excited about it. I am hoping to have the first issue out by the end of the month which will feature my own work. More information will be available soon. The online gallery will be curated by myself and Anita Totha, registrar from Yossi Milo Gallery. It will feature the work of emerging photographers in bi-weekly group and solo shows. - I really enjoy Matt Nighswander's series Chicagoland, "When I first moved to Chicago, I was slightly confused by the term "Chicagoland." I heard it used in TV and radio ads when I wasn't quite paying attention and I wondered initially if it might be an amusement park or an enormous mall. I've chosen "chicagoland" for the working title of my project not because I am interested in documenting the wide expanse of the Chicago metro region (in fact, the vast majority of these pictures were all shot within Chicago’s city limits) but because of the psychological space the word implies to me. The pictures were taken in Chicago, but the best ones seem only loosely tethered to the reality from which they spring. If they are about sprawl and the forlorn spaces of generic architecture it is at least partly because these spaces are where the transformative powers of photography can have the greatest effect; where the photographic image can create a sense of drama and psychological tension that may not have been present in the original scene." - Yann Gross is a photographer from Switzerland. He was recently nominated as one of the 13 Emerging Photographers of 2008 by American Photo magazine. His series Kitintale Skates is fantastic. The project is about the first and only skatepark in East Africa which was built by the local kids in the suburb of Kampala. Humble Arts Update

- The Humble Arts Foundation updated their site today with a new solo and group show as well as the recipient of the Fall 2008 Grant. The second grant given out in 2008 by the foundation went to Michael Bühler-Rose and his project Constructing the Exotic. The series is wonderful and a good choice for the winner, congratulations Michael! This months solo show is from Marc McAndrews and his series Nevada Rose. In the series McAndrews points his lens at the thriving prostitution ranches in the desert towns of Nevada. I had never seen McAndrews work before this and really enjoy the series, I hope a book comes out sometime soon. The group show also has some really great work in it including Ryan Steele, Carter Rowley, Matthew Bessinger, Christina Kerns, and my good friend Sarah Kalagvano. - Jörg posted an announcement yesterday for a new show that he curated for Michael Mazzeo Gallery. The show is opening on December 11th with an artists reception from 6-8pm. Woods - Some Shame (Tour Tape)

- This is the tour tape from Woods' recent West Coast tour. This is hands down my favorite release of the year, it is perfect from start to finish. You will not be able to get these songs out of your head. The cover of Grahm Nash's "Military Madness" is spot on, I remember seeing them play it live a couple of months ago and was blown away then and I can't stop listening to it now that I have the recorded version.

World AIDS Day

- Richard Renaldi made a post today in honor of World AIDS day. "Today we reflect on all of the people that are infected with HIV, to educate people about this disease, to inspire through the courageous leadership of others, and to honor those that have died in this horrible pandemic." He also wrote about his own personal experience with HIV and posted two fabulous bodies of work Housing is Healthcare and Long Time Survivors each dealing with people with HIV/AIDS. Sander's Children

- James Danziger made a post on his blog The Year in Pictures on Wednesday about the new show going up at his gallery on December 3rd. The show is called Sander's Children: Figurative Photography in the Tradition of August Sander, and shows the influence that August Sander has had on the history of photography. The show looks like it is going to be fantastic, it includes the work of Seydou Keita, William Eggleston, Irving Penn, Hiroh Kikai, Albrecht Tubke, Milton Rogovin, Richard Avedon, Rineke Dijkstra, Lolo Veleko, The Sartorialist, Diane Arbus, as well as Sander himself. This will be a must see show this winter, hopefully I'll see you at the opening.

- The newest show up on the Women in Photography website is from photographer Dina Kantor. Dina lives and works as a teacher in Brooklyn. Her project Finnish Jewish has some really beautiful portraits. From her statement; "In January 2006 I began photographing the members of the small Jewish community in Finland. In addition to being a visual record, the images function as a sociological document exploring how Finnish Jews live, work and practice their religious traditions. How does Judaism survive in a country where there are only two synagogues? In a nation of 5.3 million people, how do 1,500 Jews maintain their cultural identity; how do they have a voice?". - Alec Soth just updated his site with a new project The Last Days of W. The pictures are a combination of work he has shot during George W. Bush's time in office. "During these last days of the administration, what is the point of protest, satire or any other sort of rabble-rousing? In assembling this collection of pictures I’ve made over the last eight years, I’m not really trying to accomplish much at all. Matt Licari

- While I was at school yesterday I went to the photo building to check out the senior photography show. Although the show was dissapointing overall there was one stand out and that was Matt Licari. Matt was actually suitemates with a good friend of mine a few years ago when we were all living in the dorms and that was when I first saw his skateboarding photographs. Since then he has gone more towards the fine art route with his photography and made a really great series of portraits. He has shown his work in a solo show at Eyebuzz Fine Art in Tarrytown, New York and I'm excited to see the new work his website promises is coming soon. See more of his work here.

Ahmet Unver

- Ahmet Unver's series Gurbet/Gone Away portrays the people of a small Turkish community in Sweden that relocated there after Sweden partially opened its doors to immigrants in the 1960's. Not wanting to lose their Turkish culture the people of the community never fully became a part of Swedish community. From the artists statement; "Born into this community, I have often felt that I have been living in a bubble, where people's developments are often hindered and where an awareness of the wider world is obscured. Since moving away from Sweden my inner conflict between my history and my expectations has been more apparent and my search for my own identity has become stronger. While I have been returning to Stockholm to photograph the people of the Turkish community I have discovered a different flow of life and although many of the community members discuss the dream of one day returning "home" there is a silent feeling that it wont happen." Charles Johnstone

- I first heard of Charles Johnstone's work through The Camera Club of New York's benefit auction held on the 10th of this month. Johnstone’s pristine imagery, devoid of people, conveys a sense of isolation that belies these sunny and vibrant scenes in Havana Cuba. Johnstone’s photographs capture the essence of Havana’s colorful yet deteriorating landscape. In fact, many of the buildings Johnstone photographed just a year or two ago no longer exist. Sze Tsung Leong

- While I was at Yossi Milo last week I got a chance to see a bunch of prints from Sze Tsung Leong's new series Cities. Sze Tsung is one of my favorite photographers and also one the nicest people I've met in the photo world. While I was interning at the gallery he was around more than any of the other artists, always coming in with new prints from his Horizons series from a new part of the world. At the time I didn't know that while traveling around the world for the Horizons series he was shooting the companion series Cities. "Cities is a series depicting urban fabrics throughout the world. Differences, parallels, and variations between built environents are revealed through consistent composition and viewpoint. Disparate locations are juxtaposed and a new geography is outlined." Like the last series everything is being hand printed by Sze Tsung himself and the prints look absolutely beautiful. See more of the work here.

Luigi Ghirri

- I finally got a chance to go to Aperture to see the Luigi Ghirri show and WOW! I had only recently heard of Ghirri when Aperture published his book It's Beautiful Here, Isn't It. After seeing some of the images from the book I couldn't wait for the show, his first major U.S. exhibition of photographs. The installation of the show is breathtaking, playing nicely to Ghirri's consistent color palette. There is almost too much to look at because there are so many prints in the show and each one stands on its own so well. Ghirri shared the sensibility of what became known in the U.S. as the New Color and the New Topographics movements before they had even been named. It's hard to believe that Ghirri is just now getting the recognition that he so obviously deserves out of his home country of Italy. Ghirri's work has influenced a generation of photographers, including William Eggleston who wrote the preface for the book. If your in New York make sure to stop by and see the exhibit. Black Devil

Black Devil - Disco Club
- Originally released in 1978, Black Devil's "Disco Club" is an extremely rare disco release. The record is credited to Joachim Sherylee and Junior Claristidge. It was made manually in a recording studio in the suburbs of Paris using synths and occasional tape loops and a drummer, without the aid of MIDI or computers. Disco Club was unearthed by Rephlex Records and rereleased in 2004. Many doubted the authenticity of the record, due to its futuristic sound. DOWNLOAD THIS NOW!

- For his project CDG, Engström spent three weeks isolated in an airport hotel, photographing the spaces and terminals of Charles de Gaulle. His images capture luggage carts, plastic chairs, parking garages, and weary travelers. The images were photographed in color and then printed using a special process that renders the print with a overall cast of gray, creating haunting monochromes. I recently saw a print of the top image above while at Aperture and the result of this printing process is really something beautiful. See more work from this project as well as others here.

- I was reading through the archive of Alec's blog and came across the work of Tom Sandberg. I automatically fell in love with Sandberg's work, the softness and variety of it all really connected with me. His black and white photos are really about photography, about the act of seeing, and ultimately about being in the world. Sandberg lives and works in Oslo, Norway and Paris, France. - I just heard about Pieter Hugo's new series Nollywood, and once again he has blown me away. The subject of the photos is the burgeoning film industry in Nigeria which happens to be the third largest in the world behind Hollywood and Bollywood. Pieter Hugo is one of my favorite photographers, the show for his series The Hyena & Other Men was one of the highlights of my internship at Yossi Milo Gallery. - Liz Kuball made a post last week about her disapointment over not being picked for Photolucida's Critical Mass Competition. She had an huge response from other non-finalists and decided to make a group show on her blog of all the work she recieved. The work looks really great, I couldn't imagine being on the Critical Mass review board and having to pick between these and the winning photographers. - Noel Rodo - Vankeulen of We Can't Paint fame launched the first issue of his new online photography magazine Wassenaar last week. The magazine features portfolios from Julia Baum, Alexander Binder, Gustav Gustafsson, Michael Bühler-Rose, Misha de Ridder, and Andrés Marroquín Winkelmann as well as a group show. There is also an interview with Lina Scheynius by Johanna Reed and book reviews. Overall I really love the magazine and can't wait for the next issue. Congrats Noel on a very successful first issue.

I first heard of Nga's work a while back when another series he shot in Somalia was featured on James Danziger's blog. R.I.P. Frank Navetta

- Frank Navetta was one of the founding members of the band The Descendents. He founded the band with with Tony Lombardo and Bill Stevenson in 1979. I just found out that he passed away on Friday. His bandmates made the announcement,

"We're very sorry to announce that founding member of The DESCENDENTS, and close friend Frank Navetta passed away on October 31, 2008 after becoming ill over the course of a few days. This is obviously a huge loss for the DESCENDENTS family. His contribution to the band, and to music in general can not be overstated. Frank will be truly missed. We will share information about memorial services when we find out."
The Descendents are one of my favorite bands of all time, I will be jamming to Milo Goes to College all week, download it below. R.I.P. Frank Navetta.

- Dash Snow's photographs show the gritty, seedy, and taboo of the alternative side of society with an intimacy rarely shown. His polaroids of the perpetual "night before" show sex, drugs, and violence with complete honesty, creating a way of viewing his own life as purely an observer. - Thobias Fäldt is a Swedish photographer, his photos are snapshots but he seems to be doing a lot more with the medium then the new crop of photographers shooting this way. The pictures all have this strange aura and are compositionally fantastic. His series Year One will be published by Steidl this winter and I can't wait to get a copy. He will also be featured in the first issue of Lay Flat, Shane Lavalette's new publication devoted to promoting the best in contemporary photography and writing on the medium(if you can, donate some money to get the publication of its feet). Malick Sidibe

- Malick Sidibe owns a photo studio in Mali, throughout the 60's and 70's he took pictures of the youth of the city, both in posed portraits and snapshots. Like many other African artists of the time, Sidibe didn't begin to get recognition out of his country until the '90s. While I was interning I picked up one of his prints from another gallery for a group show. I studied the little 5x7 picture in its brightly painted frame for a while not really understanding its importance. It wasn't until I saw that picture in the context of the rest of his work that I got it and understood why Malick Sidibe is one of the most important photographers from the African continent. "Having recorded five albums as limited edition CD-Rs, Fischbeck now divides his time between touring and posting music on his interactive website. The ongoing Hawks and Sparrows (2003– ), originally released as CD-Rs individually packaged with “the first flowers of spring,” has evolved into a free-download project. Its eighteen tracks are based on field recordings taken at four antiwar gatherings from which he removed all language-based rhetoric, leaving processed samples of “pauses, whistles and yells, drums, sirens, helicopters, electric hums, boom boxes” and more. The unexpectedly musical results range from meditational, harmonic loops of sound to crackling distortion that recalls music played through blown speakers." - The Whitney Museum of Art

- This is a 5 minute documentary of Luke Fishbeck(Lucky Dragons) describing his project "Make A Baby", quite an interesting watch. "Make A Baby is the generic term for an ongoing series of experiments into the possibilities of using skin contact between performers as a means of transmitting and controlling data and creating a positive social environment."

He has published seven books and has won numerous awards such as the Dutch Icodo Award in 2003 for his series Traces of War and the World Press Photo 2004 Portrait Stories Award. - Doug Dubois' series of family photographs are really amazing and some of my favorite work that I have recently been exposed to. He started the Family Photos series in 1984 and shot the project until 1992, then in 1999 he picked the project up again and continued shooting for the next five years. The photos show the closeness and turmoils of a family growing over 20+ years in beautiful saturated colors. - While I was at Aperture the other night I was looking in the limited edition print room and was floored by the above Michal Chelbin print. The subject matter could easily be compared to Diane Arbus, from her artist statement "The images in this series are an attempt to capture human stories in everyday life, those that exist in the space between the odd and the ordinary. My images are almost always of people and they usually take the form of portraits. Most of the people I photograph have something in common; they are not the mainstream, and many of them are small town performers (For example, they could be dwarfs in a theatre play, ball room dancers or young contortionists)," but her beautiful color palette reminds me a lot of Alec Soth. Her photos have a very cinematic feel and give off the sense of youth in transition. I remember modeling for Sarah for one of her first photo classes and have seen her grow from her humble beginnings. - Jacob Holdt's American Pictures is one of my new obsessions. Coming to America from Denmark in the 1970's Holdt traveled the country by hitch-hiking and finding places to stay from those he got rides from. After describing the poverty, racism, and class divisions he witnessed in letters to his parents, his father sent him a $30 pocket sized Canon Dial camera to document his experiences. Before setting out on his journey he had no interest in art photography, but 15,000 pictures later he made one of the most real and thoughtful bodies of work I have ever seen, really representing every aspect of American society. Bruce Wrighton

- I just read about Bruce Wrighton's work over on Ofer Wolberger's Horses Think blog and had to make a post about it. I love finding photographers that have influenced my own work in some way without even knowing about the artist beforehand. This first happened when I originally saw Richard Renaldi's Figure and Ground and again when I delved deeper into August Sander's work in a Photo History class. Wrighton comes from the same photographic tradition as those photographers, his portraits are beautiful and I will definently be making my way to Laurence Miller Gallery before I go to the event at Aperture on Wednesday to see the pictures in person. The show will be up till October 25th.

- Lise Sarfati has been one of my favorite photographers since I was first introduced to her work while interning at Yossi Milo Gallery. Both of her bodies of work are rich with emotion and the colors in her pictures are breathtaking. I just found out that she is the next photographer to have a Magnum Fashion Magazine coming out following the success of the earlier ones edited by Martin Parr, Bruce Gilden, and Alec Soth which will be available in November. She also has a new show titled Rough, Cold and Close: A Russian Poem which is opening at Yossi Milo on October 23rd, which is surely going to be one not to miss. - Leafes is a band from Sweden that is almost impossible to get a hold of in America. I've been trying to track down more of their stuff for so long. I managed to get the songs from the tape that they put out on Release The Bats!, but couldn't find anything else until I came upon this a few months ago. In The Mountains Belly is an ep that was only released in Sweden but is available for download from the label. This is just a really great folk album, it's been in constant rotation and I think most people will enjoy it. Check them out on myspace. I don't think they will be making it to the states anytime soon so heres a live video:

For some reason I thought that the book only had the series Family Business in it but once I opened it up I realized it was a retrospective of Epstein's entire career. - The New York Times Magazine this week had two really great spreads of photos. The first, and sticking with my black and white theme for the day, is from photographer Lynsey Addario. Addario illustrates Dexter Filkins story about the Taliban and Al Qaeda establishing a safe haven in Pakistan's tribal areas along the Afghan border. The photos are beautiful and some of my favorite documentary work I have seen in a while. Read the story and see the rest of the work here.

- The second story was photographed by one of my favorite photographers Tierney Gearon. Since I first saw her show/documentary The Mother Project I have been a huge fan of Tierney. Although there are only two photos I love them both and Tierney's usual style shines though to her commercial work. - I realized that I haven't posted about any black and white photographers, I came across Michael Garlington's work looking at old issues of Seesaw Magazine. His photos remind me off a darker more disturbing Diane Arbus. Like Arbus, Garlington's an artist and photographer who takes hauntingly good portraits. New Photography at MOMA

- I first heard of Mikhael Subotzky's work last summer in an issue of Aperature. His series Beaufort West is stunning. It is unbelievable that he was able to take such depravity and create such a beatiful body of work about it. Subotzky's series "portrays a small desert town in South Africa's Western Cape blighted by unemployment, rampant crime, domestic violence, poverty, and segregation."

The other artist that MOMA decided to put in this years fall exhibit is Josephine Meckseper. I had never seen Meckseper's work before I read about it in the New York Times this morning but it seems like it is also a quite interesting series, "In her photographs and signature vitrine displays, Meckseper explores the media's strategy of mixing political news and advertising content. Her installation includes a selection of life-size photographs of models dressed in vintage lingerie from the 1950s, from her 2006 Blow-Up series. Also included is Quelle International, a new group of pictures culled from a mail-order catalogue popular in Germany in the 1970s that have been printed on reflective Mylar." and judging by pictures on the internet from Saatchi Gallery, an even more interesting installation. I am quite excited to make a trip to MOMA to see this work in person after the exhibit opens on Wednesday. Find out more about the exhibition here.

- I've been waiting for so long for the new Alessandra Sanguinetti show. While I was interning at Yossi Millo Gallery I got to see a number of the prints from the show which were absolutely fantastic, but judging from the pictures on the galleries website the best work is all new stuff that I haven't seen. - Yuval Yairi's work is something that I normally wouldn't really like, because of it just being overly technical, but the photos in his series Palaces of Memory are pretty amazing. The colors are so vibrant and the scenes are beautiful. I wish that I saw the show when it was up at Andrew Meislin Gallery. See more work here.

- This album is so much fun to listen to, I've been putting it on everyday when I wake up, gets the day started right. El Guincho is basically the Spanish version of Panda Bear. His musical style relies heavily on the use of sampling and incorporates elements of Afrobeat, Dub, Tropicália and Rock and Roll. This is the kind of album I feel like anybody can get into. Highly recommended!

Crystal Stilts - S/T
- Crystal Stilts is a band from Brooklyn that originally formed as two piece in 2003. They eventually added more members including the bass player from Ninjas and the drummer from Vivian Girls. Their sound could be compared to a dreamier Velvet Underground or The Jesus and the Mary Chain, even fans of Interpol will be pleased. The record compiles their 12" ep and the Shatterd Shine 7". I can't stop listening to this, Woodsist have done it again, releasing another gem of a record. Can't wait to hear more from this band.
