Luigi Ghirri

- I finally got a chance to go to Aperture to see the Luigi Ghirri show and WOW! I had only recently heard of Ghirri when Aperture published his book It's Beautiful Here, Isn't It. After seeing some of the images from the book I couldn't wait for the show, his first major U.S. exhibition of photographs. The installation of the show is breathtaking, playing nicely to Ghirri's consistent color palette. There is almost too much to look at because there are so many prints in the show and each one stands on its own so well. Ghirri shared the sensibility of what became known in the U.S. as the New Color and the New Topographics movements before they had even been named. It's hard to believe that Ghirri is just now getting the recognition that he so obviously deserves out of his home country of Italy. Ghirri's work has influenced a generation of photographers, including William Eggleston who wrote the preface for the book. If your in New York make sure to stop by and see the exhibit. Aperture's holiday sale also just started, all books are 30% off and you can pick up Ghirri's book It's Beautiful Here, Isn't It for under $40.
