Jacob Holdt

- Jacob Holdt's American Pictures is one of my new obsessions. Coming to America from Denmark in the 1970's Holdt traveled the country by hitch-hiking and finding places to stay from those he got rides from. After describing the poverty, racism, and class divisions he witnessed in letters to his parents, his father sent him a $30 pocket sized Canon Dial camera to document his experiences. Before setting out on his journey he had no interest in art photography, but 15,000 pictures later he made one of the most real and thoughtful bodies of work I have ever seen, really representing every aspect of American society. See more of his work here.
